Quick answers

Error 6150, in five questions.

What is QuickBooks Error 6150?

A QuickBooks Desktop company-file error, shown as “Error -6150, -1006”. Intuit’s article (updated August 3, 2026) says it “means your company file could have some issues that need repair.”

What causes Error 6150?

Intuit’s article names two things: issues in the company file that need repair, and — in rare cases — the CryptoWall virus or other malicious software. It does not rank causes or list others.

Can I fix Error 6150 myself?

Intuit’s steps, in its order: check for CryptoWall or other malware; restore a recent backup (.QBB); use Auto Data Recovery. If the error is still there after that, Intuit says to restore an older file or create a new one.

When does Error 6150 need a ProAdvisor?

When Intuit’s steps don’t clear it, you have no usable backup, or malware was involved and you need the books rebuilt from what’s left once the security issue is dealt with.

How is Error 6150 related to other 6000-series codes?

They are all QuickBooks Desktop company-file errors, but Intuit gives each code its own article and its own steps. 6150, -1006 points to a company file that may need repair — don’t assume another code’s fix applies to it.

In plain terms

Error 6150, plainly.

Error -6150, -1006 is a QuickBooks Desktop company-file error. Intuit’s current article (updated August 3, 2026) defines it in one line: it “means your company file could have some issues that need repair.” The same article says that in rare cases the CryptoWall virus and other malicious software can cause it and stop QuickBooks from opening.

Intuit’s fix does not repair the file in place. Its steps are to check for malware, restore a recent backup, and use Auto Data Recovery — and Intuit’s data-issues article lists -6150, 1006 among the errors where, once those steps are done, you “need to restore an older file or create a new one.” If that leaves you without a usable file, or with a gap in the books to rebuild, a QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnostic sets out what can be recovered.

What causes 6150

What Intuit says causes it.

Intuit’s current Error 6150 article (updated August 3, 2026) names these two. It does not rank them.

Cause 01 · Company-file issues that need repair

Intuit’s definition: “Error -6150, -1006 means your company file could have some issues that need repair.” Its own fix is to restore a backup or recover data, not to repair the file in place.

Cause 02 · CryptoWall or other malware (rare)

Intuit says that “in rare cases” the CryptoWall virus and other malicious software can cause Error -6150, -1006 and stop QuickBooks from opening. Intuit also says Intuit Data Services is unable to repair company files affected this way.

The self-fix

How to fix Error 6150 yourself.

Intuit’s steps, in Intuit’s order. If they don’t resolve it, stop and book a diagnostic.

1

Check for CryptoWall or other malware

Open File Explorer, then find and open your QuickBooks folder. Look for .txt or .html files with words like “decrypt” or “instructions” in them. If you find any, stop and contact your antivirus provider — Intuit says Intuit Data Services is unable to repair company files affected this way. If you find none, go to the next step.

2

Restore a recent backup (.QBB)

Restore your most recent backup through File → Open or Restore Company. Intuit notes you’ll lose any work entered between that backup and today, and its restore guidance says not to replace your existing company file when you restore.

3

Use Auto Data Recovery

If you don’t have a usable backup, use QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery to recover lost data, following Intuit’s Auto Data Recovery article.

4

Still seeing it? Restore an older file or create a new one

Intuit lists -6150, 1006 among the errors where, once its steps are done, “You need to restore an older file or create a new one.” If that leaves you with no usable file, or with a gap in the books to rebuild, stop retrying and get help: a QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnostic sets out what can be recovered, against a written scope.

When to call

Three signals it’s a ProAdvisor call.

The file is genuinely damaged

Intuit’s steps are done and the company file still won’t open. From here the work is restoring from what you have and rebuilding what’s missing, not more retries.

You have no usable backup

There’s no backup to restore and Auto Data Recovery didn’t bring the data back. Rebuilding the books from bank records, source documents and whatever file you do have is careful work — the wrong move can cost transactions.

Malware was involved

Error 6150 followed a CryptoWall-style infection. Intuit sends you to your antivirus provider first and says Intuit Data Services can’t repair files affected this way. Once the security issue is handled, a ProAdvisor can help rebuild the books from a clean backup.

Software, or the books?

When Error 6150 is no longer a software problem.

In Intuit’s words, Error 6150 means the company file could have some issues that need repair. If Intuit’s steps get the file open, the next step is confirming what survived — that is a review of the books, not the software.

  • The repaired or restored file is missing transactions or lists.
  • There is no recent backup to compare against.
  • Reconciled balances changed after the repair.

Start with the free QuickBooks file review — a limited review that identifies likely issues and the information needed for a written scope, with the findings in plain English. If the findings show that the books themselves need work, that is QuickBooks cleanup, quoted as a fixed fee against a written scope before any work starts.

Self-fix didn’t clear Error 6150?

A QuickBooks ProAdvisor scopes what can be recovered — a focused diagnostic is from $1,200 — a fixed fee, set after scoping.

Who diagnoses it

A QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnoses past the surface.

When Intuit’s steps end at “restore an older file or create a new one,” the real work is deciding which file to rebuild from and getting the missing transactions back — from an older backup, bank records and source documents. A QuickBooks ProAdvisor who works in Desktop and Enterprise files sets out what can be recovered, does the work against a written scope, and checks the result before closing.
