Quick answers

Error 6123, in five questions.

What is QuickBooks Error 6123?

A QuickBooks company-file error (a 6000-series code, shown as “Error: -6123, 0”). Intuit’s article (updated 8/5/2026) says it appears while opening, upgrading or restoring a company file and is likely caused by a network or file issue — and that on some computers it’s related to an ARM-based processor. A QuickBooks Desktop and Enterprise error — it does not occur in QuickBooks Online.

What causes Error 6123?

From Intuit’s article: (1) a network issue; (2) an ARM-based processor (Snapdragon or Qualcomm) — QuickBooks Desktop is designed for Intel or AMD; (3) opening the company file from Windows Explorer instead of QuickBooks; (4) restoring from an online storage folder or a removable drive; (5) restoring a backup (.qbb) on a new computer; (6) a company-file (data) issue.

Can I fix Error 6123 myself?

Often, yes — Intuit’s order: check your computer’s processor (ARM computers need an Intel/AMD computer, cloud hosting, or QuickBooks Online); run Quick Fix my Program from Tool Hub; run File Doctor. When restoring, move the backup to your local hard drive, or restore from a portable copy (.qbm) on a new computer.

When does Error 6123 need a ProAdvisor?

When Intuit’s steps don’t resolve it, the error comes back, it appears alongside other 6000-series codes, or File Doctor can’t repair the file — a signal the company file itself needs careful repair. Intuit also offers its own data services team when File Doctor fails.

How is Error 6123 related to other 6000-series codes?

The 6000-series are all company-file errors — QuickBooks can’t open or access the file. -6123, 0 is the one Intuit ties to a network or file issue and, uniquely, to ARM-based processors. Other codes such as 6000, -83 and 6000, -301 have their own Intuit articles and steps.

In plain terms

Error 6123, plainly.

Error 6123, 0 appears when QuickBooks Desktop can’t open, upgrade or restore the company file. Intuit’s current article (updated 8/5/2026) says “the error is likely caused by a network or file issue,” and that it “might be related to your computer’s hardware”: QuickBooks Desktop is designed for Intel or AMD processors and doesn’t work properly on ARM systems such as Snapdragon or Qualcomm. Intuit also says to open the company file from QuickBooks, not from Windows Explorer.

Intuit’s steps, in order: check your computer’s processor; run Quick Fix my Program; run File Doctor. If the error appears while restoring, restore from your local hard drive rather than an online storage folder or removable drive, or restore from a portable copy (.qbm) on a new computer. If those steps don’t resolve it, or the error comes back, a QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnostic looks at what’s left — often the network setup or the company file itself. Error 6123 is a QuickBooks Desktop and Enterprise error; it does not appear in QuickBooks Online.

What causes 6123

Six causes Intuit names.

From Intuit’s current -6123, 0 article (updated 8/5/2026). Intuit doesn’t rank them; the fix steps below follow Intuit’s order.

Cause 01 · A network issue

Intuit’s article says the error “is likely caused by a network or file issue.” Its steps for this side are Quick Fix my Program and File Doctor from QuickBooks Tool Hub.

Cause 02 · An ARM-based processor

Intuit says Error -6123, 0 “might be related to your computer’s hardware”: QuickBooks Desktop is designed for Intel or AMD processors and doesn’t work properly on ARM systems such as Snapdragon or Qualcomm. Intuit’s options: move QuickBooks to an Intel or AMD computer, use cloud hosting through an authorized provider, or switch to QuickBooks Online.

Cause 03 · Opening the file from Windows Explorer

Intuit says to open your company file from QuickBooks and not from Windows Explorer, since opening it from Windows Explorer can cause this error.

Cause 04 · Restoring from online storage or a removable drive

When the error appears while restoring a company file, Intuit says to move the backup to your local hard drive — don’t open it from an online storage folder or a removable drive.

Cause 05 · Restoring a backup on a new computer

When the error appears while restoring a backup (.qbb) on a new computer, Intuit’s fix is to restore from a portable copy (.qbm) of the company file instead.

Cause 06 · A company-file (data) issue

The file side of “a network or file issue.” Intuit’s fix is File Doctor, which scans and repairs common data issues; if File Doctor fails but your data is intact, Intuit points to its data services team. This is where a diagnostic is warranted.

The self-fix

How to fix Error 6123 yourself.

Six steps, in the order Intuit’s article gives them. Steps 4 and 5 apply only when restoring; if none resolves it, stop and book a diagnostic.

1

Check your computer’s processor

Intuit’s Step 1. If the processor is ARM-based (Snapdragon, Qualcomm), QuickBooks Desktop won’t work properly on it — move QuickBooks to an Intel or AMD computer, use cloud hosting through an authorized provider, or switch to QuickBooks Online. As a temporary workaround, Intuit says to close QuickBooks, end QBDBMgrN.exe, QBCFMonitorService.exe and QBHelp.exe in Task Manager, and reopen QuickBooks.

2

Run Quick Fix my Program

Intuit’s Step 2. Open QuickBooks Tool Hub → Program Problems → Quick Fix my Program. Then open your company file from inside QuickBooks — not from Windows Explorer.

3

Run File Doctor

Intuit’s Step 3. In Tool Hub, select Company File Issues → Run QuickBooks File Doctor and let it scan and repair the file. If File Doctor fails but your data is intact, Intuit points to its data services team.

4

Restoring a company file? Restore from the local hard drive

If the error appears while restoring, and the backup is on the network or an external storage device, move it to your local hard drive first. Don’t open it from an online storage folder or a removable drive.

5

Restoring on a new computer? Use a portable copy

If the error appears while restoring a backup (.qbb) on a new computer, create a portable company file (.qbm) and restore from it instead of the backup.

6

Still there? Escalate

If Error -6123, 0 persists after Intuit’s steps, stop — continued retries can mask deeper damage. Intuit’s own support and data services team are one path; a QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnostic is the independent one, resolved against a written scope.

The causes and steps above follow Intuit’s own support article, linked below so you can check them at the source. Where this page and Intuit’s article ever differ, follow Intuit.

When to call

Three signals it’s a ProAdvisor call.

It persists after all six steps

You’ve worked Intuit’s steps and Error 6123 still blocks the file. What’s left can be the network setup or damage to the company file itself.

It keeps coming back

Error 6123 clears, then returns. A repeat means something in the network or the file keeps breaking, and a one-time fix only masks it.

It’s appearing alongside other 6000-series codes

Error 6123 alongside other 6000-series codes means more than one thing may be wrong at once — Intuit has a separate article for each code. The moment to stop self-fixing and have the file assessed.

Software, or the books?

When Error 6123 is no longer a software problem.

Error 6123, 0 stops QuickBooks Desktop opening, upgrading or restoring the company file. Once the file opens, the books inside it still need checking if you restored or switched copies to get there.

  • You opened a restored or copied file, and its date is not today’s.
  • Transactions from around the time of the error are missing or doubled.
  • Reconciliations no longer tie after the restore.

Start with the free QuickBooks file review — a limited review that identifies likely issues and the information needed for a written scope, with the findings in plain English. If the findings show that the books themselves need work, that is QuickBooks cleanup, quoted as a fixed fee against a written scope before any work starts.

Self-fix didn’t clear Error 6123?

A QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnoses the deeper cause — a focused diagnostic is from $1,200 — a fixed fee, set after scoping.

Who diagnoses it

A QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnoses past the surface.

When Intuit’s steps don’t hold, what’s left is past the surface — a network setup that keeps dropping the file, a backup that won’t restore cleanly, or damage to the company file that File Doctor couldn’t repair. A QuickBooks ProAdvisor who works in Desktop and Enterprise files diagnoses the actual root cause, fixes it against a written scope, and verifies the file opens cleanly before closing.
