Error 9999, in five questions.
What is QuickBooks Online Error 9999?
A QuickBooks Online bank-connection error: the connected bank account can’t update. An Intuit moderator has described it as “a script error that causes an interruption between the connection of your bank and QBO.” It is a QuickBooks Online error, not a QuickBooks Desktop company-file error.
What causes Error 9999?
Intuit hasn’t published a cause list. Intuit’s community manager (August 21, 2026) says 9999 has no dedicated troubleshooting article because it “typically comes down to something in the connection itself rather than a setting you can change on your end.”
Can I fix Error 9999 myself?
Intuit’s community manager suggests, in this order: a manual update (Accounting → Bank transactions → Update); signing in through an incognito or private window and updating again; disconnecting and reconnecting the account; uploading transactions from a bank file while the connection is down; and contacting support if it lasts more than a few days.
When does Error 9999 need a ProAdvisor?
The connection itself is Intuit’s and your bank’s to fix. A ProAdvisor helps with the books around it — when the feed has been down long enough that transactions need uploading and reconciling, or a reconnect left duplicates or gaps.
Is Error 9999 the same as a QuickBooks Desktop error?
No. Error 9999 is a QuickBooks Online bank-connection error — there is no Tool Hub, no File Doctor, and no .ND/.TLG company-file repair involved.
Error 9999, plainly.
Error 9999 appears in QuickBooks Online when a connected bank account can’t update. An Intuit moderator has described it as “a script error that causes an interruption between the connection of your bank and QBO.” Intuit has not published a help article for it: its community manager wrote on August 21, 2026 that “unlike most numbered bank connection errors, 9999 doesn’t have its own dedicated troubleshooting article, since it typically comes down to something in the connection itself rather than a setting you can change on your end.”
That shapes what you can do. The steps Intuit staff suggest are a manual update, an incognito window, a disconnect and reconnect, and uploading transactions from a bank file while the connection is down — then contacting Intuit support if it lasts more than a few days. The connection is Intuit’s and your bank’s to fix; where a QuickBooks ProAdvisor helps is the books around it — missing transactions while the feed is down, or duplicates after a reconnect. This is a QuickBooks Online error, not a QuickBooks Desktop company-file error — there is no Tool Hub, File Doctor, or .ND/.TLG file involved here.

How to fix Error 9999 yourself.
The steps Intuit’s community manager suggests (August 21, 2026), in her order.
Run a manual update
Go to Accounting, then Bank transactions, and select Update.
Try an incognito or private window
If the update doesn’t pull in your transactions, sign in to QuickBooks Online through an incognito or private browser window and update again.
Disconnect and reconnect the account
Select the tile for the account, select the pencil icon, then select Disconnect account. Reconnect it using Connect account or Link account, and choose the date range carefully so you don’t end up with duplicate transactions once it’s back online.
Upload transactions from a bank file while it’s down
So the books don’t fall behind: go to Accounting, then Bank transactions, select the Link account dropdown, then Upload from file, and follow the prompts to upload a file downloaded from your bank.
Contact Intuit support if it lasts more than a few days
Intuit’s community manager says that if the error has persisted for more than a few days despite these steps, reach out to support directly so they can investigate the connection. If instead the books have fallen behind or a reconnect left duplicates or gaps, book a free file review.

- What does error 9999 mean, and what can I do about a bank connection stuck on it? — Intuit QuickBooks Community (answer by Intuit staff)
Three signals it’s a ProAdvisor call.
The feed has been down long enough to matter
Days of transactions are missing and the books are falling behind. Uploading bank files and reconciling them properly keeps month-end on track while Intuit works on the connection.
A reconnect left duplicates or gaps
After disconnecting and reconnecting, transactions came in twice or a date range is missing. Cleaning that up and reconciling to the bank statement is bookkeeping work a ProAdvisor handles.
You’re unsure the books match the bank
You can’t tell whether what’s in QuickBooks Online matches the bank after the outage. A free file review checks the reconciliation — and only scopes paid work if there’s an actual books issue to fix.
When Error 9999 is no longer a software problem.
Error 9999 is a bank-connection error, and the connection is Intuit’s and your bank’s to restore. What the outage did to the register is the part that stays with you.
- The feed was down long enough that weeks of activity are missing.
- Reconnecting or uploading a file brought in transactions you already had.
- The QuickBooks balance and the bank statement no longer agree.
Start with the free QuickBooks file review — a limited review that identifies likely issues and the information needed for a written scope, with the findings in plain English. If the findings show that the books themselves need work, that is QuickBooks cleanup, quoted as a fixed fee against a written scope before any work starts.

The bank connection behind 9999 is Intuit’s and your bank’s to fix — if it stays down, we’ll point you to Intuit’s support rather than bill you. What a QuickBooks ProAdvisor with an active QuickBooks Online (Level 2) certification can do is keep the books right while it’s down and after it’s back: upload and match bank-file transactions, clear duplicates a reconnect created, and reconcile to the bank statement — only if there’s an actual books issue, and against a written scope.
