Please try again.” Intuit’s article (updated 8/5/2026) ties it to damaged QuickBooks support files, a damaged company file, or encryption software. A QuickBooks Desktop and Enterprise error — it does not occur in QuickBooks Online.
What causes Error 6000, -301?
Intuit names three causes: (1) one or more QuickBooks Desktop support files are damaged — the transaction log (.TLG), network descriptor (.ND) and/or data source name (.DSN) files; (2) the company file is damaged; (3) encryption software is installed.
Can I fix Error 6000, -301 myself?
Often, yes — Intuit’s steps, in order: update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release; rename the matching .tlg, .nd and .dsn files (add .OLD); run QuickBooks File Doctor from Tool Hub; disable any encryption software (its vendor has the steps).
When does Error 6000, -301 need a ProAdvisor?
When Intuit’s steps don’t clear it, the error comes back, or File Doctor points to a damaged company file — the point where the file itself needs careful repair.
How is Error 6000, -301 related to other 6000-series codes?
The 6000-series are all company-file errors — QuickBooks can’t open or access the file. Intuit’s general -6000 article gives shared first steps (update QuickBooks, run File Doctor, rename the .ND and .TLG files), and Intuit publishes separate articles for specific codes such as 6000, -301 and 6000, -83.
Error 6000, -301, plainly.
Error 6000, -301 appears when QuickBooks Desktop tries to access the company file and can’t. Intuit’s message reads: “An error occurred when QuickBooks Desktop tried to access the company file. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact Intuit Technical Support and provide them with the following error codes: (-6000, -301).” Intuit’s current article (updated 8/5/2026) names three causes: one or more QuickBooks Desktop support files are damaged — the transaction log (.TLG), network descriptor (.ND) and/or data source name (.DSN) files; the company file is damaged; or encryption software is installed.
Intuit’s fix is four steps, in this order: update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release; rename the .tlg, .nd and .dsn support files; run QuickBooks File Doctor; and disable any encryption software. If those don’t resolve it, or the error comes back, a QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnostic looks at what’s left — often the company file itself. Error 6000, -301 is a QuickBooks Desktop and Enterprise error; it does not appear in QuickBooks Online.
Three causes Intuit names.
As listed in Intuit’s current -6000, -301 article (updated 8/5/2026). Intuit doesn’t rank them; the fix steps below follow Intuit’s order.
Cause 01 · Damaged QuickBooks support files
Intuit’s first cause: one or more QuickBooks Desktop support files are damaged — the transaction log (.TLG), network descriptor (.ND) and/or data source name (.DSN) files that sit next to your company file. Renaming them is one of Intuit’s fixes; QuickBooks creates new ones.
Cause 02 · Damaged company file
Intuit’s second cause: the company (.QBW) file itself is damaged. Intuit’s fix for this is QuickBooks File Doctor. If File Doctor can’t repair it, this is where a diagnostic is warranted.
Cause 03 · Encryption software installed
Intuit’s third cause: encryption software on the computer. Intuit’s fix is to disable the encryption software if you use any, and to contact that software’s vendor for the steps — Intuit doesn’t give them.
How to fix Error 6000, -301 yourself.
Four steps, in the order Intuit’s article gives them. If all four don’t resolve it, stop and book a diagnostic.
Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release
Intuit’s first solution. Install the latest QuickBooks Desktop release, then try opening the company file again.
Rename the .TLG, .ND and .DSN support files
Open the folder that holds your company file. Find the files with the same name as your company file and the extensions .tlg, .nd and/or .dsn. Right-click each one, select Rename, and add .OLD to the end. Then open the company file again.
Run QuickBooks File Doctor
In QuickBooks Tool Hub, select Company File Issues → Run QuickBooks File Doctor (it can take up to a minute to open). Select your company file, choose Check your file (the middle option only), select Continue, and enter your QuickBooks admin password.
Disable encryption software, then escalate
If you use encryption software, Intuit says to disable it and to contact the software’s vendor for instructions. If Error 6000, -301 persists after all four steps, stop — continued retries on a damaged file can make things worse. A QuickBooks ProAdvisor diagnostic identifies what’s left and resolves it against a written scope.

Three signals it’s a ProAdvisor call.
It persists after all four steps
You’ve worked Intuit’s steps — update, rename the support files, File Doctor, encryption — and Error 6000, -301 still blocks the file. What’s left can be the company file itself.
It keeps coming back
Error 6000, -301 clears, then returns. A repeat means something keeps damaging the support files or the company file, and a one-time fix only masks it.
It’s appearing alongside other 6000-series codes
Error 6000, -301 alongside other 6000-series codes means more than one thing may be wrong at once — Intuit has a separate article for each code. The moment to stop self-fixing and have the file assessed.
When Error 6000, -301 is no longer a software problem.
Error 6000, -301 is about QuickBooks reaching the company file. Once the file opens, the error is solved; whether the file is complete and correct is a separate check.
- You restored a backup or a copy to get past the error, and recent work is missing.
- Balances differ from what they were before the error.
- Reconciled periods now show discrepancies.
